If you follow me on Instagram then you will know that I’m a culinary explorer boldly going where no taste bud has gone before. Or something. Anything unusual on a menu that I haven’t seen before I have to try.

I love sushi and I love pizza so when I saw the two words combined on a menu recently, my food heart skipped a beat.

Behold sushi pizza:

Sadly it was not all I had hoped and dreamed about. The ‘pizza’ base of deep fried, breadcrumbed rice – which was chewy and greasy – is not something I want to trouble my mouth with again. I do get the concept though and with a different base this would work.

The good old interweb tells me that sushi pizza was invented by a Japanese chef in Canada in the 1990s and is now considered one of Toronto’s signature dishes.

I’m not aware of any other London restaurants serving sushi pizza so if you want to try it head to

Sapporo Icihiban, 13 Catford Broadway, Catford, London SE6 4SP. Tel: 020 8690 8487

Have you tried sushi pizza before? How about the pizza crunchy, curry chocolate or wasabi kitkats?

I’ve had something called a sushi pizza before, but it consisted of a few different ingredients. It had rice, spicy tuna, avocado and was deep fried. Although the deep frying was a bit much for me it was okay. I’d get it again, just not a go to.

      Was the whole thing deep-fried?

Yes, like a sushi ball dipped in batter then deep fried. Then cut into fours and drizzled with spicy mayo.
