I’ve been to Miami at least 25 times for work, rest and play! To know it is to love it. Each and every visit I discover something new in the ‘Magic City’.
My new fave part of town is Wynwood/Design District. I love sending people to check it out and their surprised reaction to this side of Miami that’s still under the radar. The evolution from a manufacturing/warehouse district to a thriving cultural hub has been fascinating to watch. There are now close to 200 galleries and countless walls in the neighbourhood covered in stunning kaleidoscopic creative by some of the greatest graffiti and street artists anywhere in the world. I know there are people who don’t consider graffiti to be an art – well i challenge you to see the work here and not be blown away by something. Here are a few pics from my last visit just before Christmas. The nature of street art is such that they might not be there next time I am. Manatee by ROA Here’s a Banksy. One of the few works behind gates… The Wynwood Walls, the ambitious project by Tony Goldman to transform warehouse walls into giant canvases showcasing (and protecting) the greatest collection of street art and graffiti in the world. Above and below are by Shephard Fairey (famous for THAT Obama poster) At neighbourhood hotspot, Wynwood Kitchen & Bar – 11-foot “stick man” by David Benjamin Sherry Wynwood is not really on the tourist trail…yet. To explore, I suggest a company called Roam Rides that really know the scene and artists. They do a great Vespa tour and take you places you probably wouldn’t discover on your own. If you’re there on the second Saturday of the month, do check out Second Saturday (what it says on the tin!), an art walk from 7 – 11pm. Galleries throw open their doors to showcase their wares, offer comp cocktails, DJs spin and it’s pretty much a big old art fiesta. And it’s free. Forthcoming 2012 dates as follows: 11 February/10 March/14 April/12 May/9 June/14 July/11 August/8 September/13 October/10 November/8 December
