Natural Beauty: Alchemy Skin and Soul Triphala Facial Cleansing Powder Review

Alchemy Skin and Soul, is an organic skincare range that I discovered earlier in the year. The artisanal, line is hand-made in the mountains of Andalusia and uses 100% natural, organic and wildcrafted ingredients grown locally. The company is committed to ethical sourcing of raw ingredients and I like its ‘slow beauty’ ethos. Read my interview with the owner of Alchemy Skin and Soul to learn more about the brand.

Everything in the Alchemy Skin and Soul range is under €15, making it great value. Much as I love ecoluxe it’s always good to find affordable options that won’t make your wallet wince. All products are made from a short list of quality ingredients, and free from phthalates, SLS, parabens, mineral oils, artificial colourings and fragrances.

I love the idea of powder cleansers. Powder products tend to require less preservative as they don’t contain water which is prime breeding ground for bacteria and they’re travel friendly. I’m still on the hunt to find one suitable for my skin, so was keen to put the Alchemy Skin and Soul Cleansing Powder to the test.

Alchemy Skin and Soul Triphala Facial Cleansing Powder Review

Alchemy Skin and Soul says:

“This is a powerful cleansing powder, combining organic Triphala dried herbal preparation, clay, organic oat grain, healing spices and essential oils, which detoxify and balance while offering antioxidants and vitamins to help regenerate and nourish the skin. This cleanser leaves skin fresh, clean and in its natural state of equilibrium, as well as offering vitamins and minerals and  increasing localized circulation. With an abundance of antibacterial and therapeutic properties, helps to fight breakouts and inflammation.”

As you can see packaging is an amber glass bottle, which helps to preserve the bottle’s content naturally by protecting from UV rays.

I’ve noticed that Ayurveda, the ancient holistic wellbeing system originating from India, is increasingly being incorporated in to Western skincare. This powder cleanser from Alchemy uses triphala (a blend of three dried fruits common in India – alma, bibhitaki, haritaki), rich in antioxidants and minerals, that is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine.  Key ingredients in the cleanser include:

  • Amlaki, also known as amla or Indian gooseberry, is a rich source of Vitamin C and is used for treating acne, eczema and rosacea
  • Bibhitaki has astringent and detoxifying properties
  • Haritaki has anti-inflammatory properties and is used for skin rejuvenation
  • Kaolin is the gentlest clay available and cleanses and exfoliates
  • Oats have long been used for  soothing skin and are high in natural saponins which help absorb dirt and oil
  • Turmeric root has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and helps to regulate sebum production

Whether you subscribe to Ayurveda or not, the ingredients make good skin sense.

The powder texture reminds me of the very fine crumb stage when you’re making shortcrust pastry. To use, you mix equal parts of the powder (around a level tablespoon) with water and apply the paste to skin, rub around the face then rinse off. Be warned it is a little messy to remove and you’ll end up with grains all over the place. I find it easiest to mix in a bowl and wash off in the shower.

I like using it on mornings when my skin need exfoliation or weekly as a mask mixed with floral water, which I leave on for around 10 minutes then rinse off. You could also mix it with yoghurt or honey for extra pampering.  It does look and feel like you’ve smeared porridge on your face!

It didn’t irritate my easily offended, dry skin and left it feeling smooth, glowing and with no tightness. However, daily use would be too much for my sensitive skin. Though it’s described as suitable for all skin types, I think as a daily cleanser it would work best on combination and oily skin.

Finally we have to talk about the mouthwatering smell. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that during the winter oats and turmeric is one of my favourite breakfast combinations.  When mixed the mask smells delicious and I have to resist licking my lips!
