Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Review & Swatches

Chubby sticks have taken over the beauty world but I’m not a fan. I’m not crazy about the crayola kindergarten flashbacks or the fact that most can’t be sharpened so you end up with a stubby stick. And then NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils walked in to my life…..

I can always rely on NARS to have my lipstick back covered. The NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils are basically extra thick lip pencils, which means they are packed with pigment. The pigment seems to saturate the lips rather than just sit on the lips. Unlike some mattes that leave your lips looking and feeling like scorched earth, the velvet finish feels comfortable on. Of course, as with all matte lipsticks, do make sure that your lips are properly moisturised before using. In terms of wear time, as long as you’re not a big old lip licker or eating mega greasy food, the colour will survive a daintily eaten meal without too much damage.

See below for swatches of most of the colours. There are a lot of nude shades in the collection which don’t do much for me – it’s the bolder colours that make me go weak at the knees.

So in summary I LOVE these. If you’re a fan of a matte lip I’d recommend you check the NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils out. There are 21 shades available on the Nars website but I’ve yet to see all of them in the flesh, as the different counters seem to have some but not all the colours.

  1. I LOVE these pencils. Can’t wait to buy more. The feel and pigmentation of them are amazing!

  2. I do so love these – I have Dolce Vita (A MUST OWN!) and Red Square, but I’ve been thinking a lot about getting Cruella and/or Dragon Girl, maybe Train Bleu…lol, I honestly love them all! And like you, I am not really a fangirl of chubby pencils, but these you just GOTTA make an exception for…

    1. Dolce Vita is ALWAYS out of stock here. I’ve got Red Square & Dragon Girl (after hunting high and low turned out to be my “perfect” red). My last 4 lip purchases have been dark which is only thing stopping me from getting Train Bleu as an attempt at restraint… long i will hold out for god knows.
